Quarter 2 – “Flowers for Algernon” Story Review Reflection
When I write my story review essay my thesis will be on how people wish for things they do not have with out thinking of the consequences. I choose this thesis because I because I have understood it best. I think I understood it the best, because I am always wishing for things I do not have. So I can understand why Charlie would wish for intelligence.
The literary elements I will use in my story review essay are parallel episodes, subplot, and allusion. There is a subplot that involves Charlie falling in love with Miss.Kinnian. Miss.Kinnian feels the same way about Charlie and they become madly in love, but with Charlie’s growing intelligence they have trouble communicating. They end up breaking up and never speak to each other again. The parallel episode that Charlie slowly realizes that Joe Carp and Frank Reilly were making fun of him. The plot is Charlie wants to become smarter. Somehow scientists discover how to make mentally handicapped people smarter, and Charlie gets his wish. But he becomes so smart he discovers that his “friends” have been making fun of him. Than he becomes so smart he can not relate or communicate with anyone and is very unhappy. Than he starts to lose his gift of intelligence, and once again becomes mentally handicapped.
There is a great value in re-reading because the first time I read something I may skip over some details or forget about a characters name. I always have a better understanding of characters and ideas when I read something more than once. It clears the story and makes it easier to understand. I have re-read this story and many others and I noticed things I didn’t notice before.
To help me finish my essay on “Flowers for Algernon” I will type a paragraph every other day so I can be finished before
